Developing The God Father was an exciting journey that pushed me both as a programmer and as a storyteller. What started as a simple plan to build a text-based RPG in C# slowly grew into a complete narrative experience filled with choices, upgrades, gang management, and a full revenge-driven storyline.
I enjoyed crafting the different player backstories the most—each one needed to feel unique, meaningful, and powerful enough to motivate the player. Whether starting as the son of a rich man seeking revenge, a small-gang leader trying to rise, or a betrayed gun dealer, each path shaped the player’s strategy and identity.
One of the biggest learning experiences was designing systems purely through text: taking over businesses, recruiting gang members, buying upgrades, and weakening the mafia. Since there are no graphics to rely on, every feature had to be clear through dialogue, pacing, and choices. It taught me how to write game text that feels natural and engaging, while also making sure the player understands every action they take.
Creating the character of Stephan—the ex-don who guides you—was another highlight. I wanted the relationship between the player and Stephan to feel like classic mafia storytelling: mentorship, loyalty, strategy, and a shared desire for revenge.
Finishing The God Father gave me a real sense of achievement. I learned a lot about structuring narrative, organizing code, and building a world entirely through text. What started as a small idea ended up becoming a full story where the player can rise, take over the city, and become the ultimate Don.
